Everything volleyball -- in numbers

As a basis for the standard stats tallied, here are the guidelines from FIVB

SERVING

FIVB official measure:

  • Service Faults – service errors are polarizing because they can be categorized as either aggression on the first touch or just lack of effort in serving. This must understood together with the total number of aces.

  • Good Service % – (or serve percentage) indicates how much of the serves are successfully played to rally.

  • Serving Efficiency – service faults are the greatest enemies of momentum, and because this relies on individual skill rather than a team effort, they must be minimized as much as possible. A negative eff% number means the player/team are creating more errors than aces, which indicates detrimental contribution of the player to the team.

PASSING

FIVB official measure:

  • Passing Contribution (player) – denotes concentration of service reception in the team, also hints on effective team rotation in play.

  • Passing % – percentage of opponent’s service being received by the team successful (i.e. how well the team handles the opponent’s serves to avoid an ace against them)

  • Adj  Passing Eff % – adjusted to include all playable passes and not just the excellent passes

SETTING

FIVB official measure:

  • Offensive Efficiency – shows % of attacks came from in-system plays. This also indicates how well the setter can distribute the ball and select the appropriate play to give the team the biggest chance of scoring a point.

ATTACKING

FIVB official measure:

  • Attack Efficiency – attack errors are fatal errors because these directly results in a point for the opponent. A negative eff% number means the player/team are creating more errors than spikes, which indicates detrimental contribution  to the team.

  • First Ball Offense – # of balls received that are successfully converted directly into an attack point

  • Hitting In-play Efficiency (Hitting IPE) – this metric is originally from Coach Chuck Rey, which is basically

BLOCKING

  • Rebound % – .

  • Dig Convertion

  • Dig Rate
